The Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard is a French-built carrier-borne strike fighter that became an icon of the Argentine Naval Aviation (COAN) following its role in the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War.
Historical Significance & Combat
- The Falklands War (1982): Operating from the Río Grande naval base, Argentine Super Étendards (SUE) launched AM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles that successfully sank the British destroyer HMS Sheffield and the merchant ship SS Atlantic Conveyor.
- The "Invincible" Claim: Argentine pilots also reported hitting the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible on May 30, 1982, though this remains a subject of historical dispute.
