Historical Context
The Dassault-Breguet Super Étendard was a French carrier-borne strike aircraft developed as an improved successor to the Étendard IVM. The prototype first flew on October 28, 1974, and the type entered French naval service in 1978. Powered by the SNECMA Atar 8K-50 turbojet and equipped with Agave radar and an inertial navigation/attack system, it was designed for maritime strike, conventional attack, reconnaissance, and nuclear missions.
The aircraft became internationally famous during the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War, when Argentine Naval Aviation Super Étendards armed with the AM39 Exocet presented a major threat to the British task force.
 
 
Key Aspects of the Super Étendard History:
Development and Origin: Developed during the 1970s after difficulties with the proposed naval SEPECAT Jaguar M, the Super Étendard retained the basic Étendard IV layout but added a new engine, improved avionics, modern navigation/attack equipment, and Agave radar.
Military and Combat Operations:
French Navy: Served from 1978 to 2016 and later operated in upgraded SEM form in combat operations including the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Libya.
Falklands/Malvinas War – 1982: Argentine Super Étendards launched Exocet attacks that struck HMS Sheffield and Atlantic Conveyor, making the aircraft/Exocet combination one of the defining naval-air weapons of the conflict.
Iran-Iraq War: Iraq leased five French aircraft from 1983 to 1985 for anti-shipping missions in the Persian Gulf.
Foreign Operators:
Argentina: Ordered 14 aircraft for Argentine Naval Aviation; five had been delivered by the outbreak of the 1982 war and the remainder followed after the conflict.
Iraq: Temporarily operated five leased French aircraft for maritime-strike missions.
Upgrades and Retirement: France modernized the type into the Super Étendard Modernisé (SEM) with improved navigation, electronic warfare, targeting, and precision-strike capability. The Rafale M replaced it in French service in 2016. Argentina formally retired its remaining Super Étendard fleet in 2023.
Design and Armament: Single-seat and carrier-capable, the aircraft was optimized for low-level maritime strike. Its best-known weapon was the AM39 Exocet, though it could also carry bombs, rockets, air-to-air missiles, reconnaissance equipment, and France's AN-52 tactical nuclear weapon.
France received 71 aircraft, while Argentina ordered 14, giving the Super Étendard an operational impact far greater than its relatively small production run might suggest.
