Historical Context
The Sud Aviation Vautour II was a French twin-engine jet developed for bomber, strike, interceptor and reconnaissance roles. Israel became the type's most important foreign operator, receiving Vautour aircraft beginning in the late 1950s.
Israeli Vautours provided long-range strike and reconnaissance capability before newer aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom II entered service.
Key Aspects of the Vautour II History:
Development and Origin: Developed in France during the 1950s as a twin-engine all-weather combat aircraft with bomber, fighter and reconnaissance versions.
Military and Combat Operations:
Israeli Air Force: Vautours were used for long-range attack, reconnaissance and specialized missions.
Six-Day War – 1967: Israeli Vautours participated in strike and reconnaissance operations against Arab air forces and strategic targets.
War of Attrition: The type continued to fly operational missions until more modern aircraft took over its role.
Foreign Operators: Israel was the principal foreign combat operator of the Vautour and used several specialized versions.
Upgrades and Retirement: Israeli aircraft received local equipment changes during service. The fleet was retired in the early 1970s as F-4E Phantoms and other newer aircraft became available.
Design and Armament: Twin-engine jet with substantial internal fuel and payload capacity, suitable for bombs, reconnaissance equipment and cannon armament depending on variant.
