The Sukhoi Su-35S "Flanker-E" is a 4.5-generation fighter primarily used by the Russian Aerospace Forces, with significant combat deployment in the Syrian civil war (starting around 2016) for air superiority and strike missions. It has been heavily utilized during the invasion of Ukraine for air defense suppression, escort, and stand-off engagement.
Key Deployment and Usage Areas:
- Syria (2016–present): Deployed to Hmeimim Air Base, used for intercepting aircraft and patrolling.
- Ukraine (2022–present): Active in,air-to-air combat, suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD), and precision strikes.
- Russia: Operated by the Russian Aerospace Forces as a premier air superiority fighter.
- Export/Proposed Users: China (PLAAF) operates a small number. Iran has reportedly received or is in the process of acquiring the type. Algeria has also been identified as a recipient of jets originally intended for other, markets.
The aircraft is designed for air superiority, featuring the N35 Irbis-E radar, capable of tracking 30 targets and engaging eight simultaneously.
