Historical Context

The Sukhoi Su-33 (Flanker-D) is a carrier-based air superiority fighter primarily used by the Russian Navy, specifically operating from the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov starting in the mid-1990s. It saw its first combat deployment in 2016 during the Syrian civil war, striking ISIS and Al-Nusra targets from the Mediterranean.

Key Operational Details:

  • Carrier Operations: The Su-33 was designed for the Russian Navy's aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov.
  • Combat Employment: In November 2016, Su-33s were deployed from the Admiral Kuznetsov off the Syrian coast for combat missions, targeting rebel-held provinces.
  • Failed Exports: China previously explored purchasing the aircraft but ultimately developed their own derivative, the Shenyang J-15.

While designed for the Soviet Navy, the collapse of the USSR meant it only ever operated under the Russian Federation flag, primarily from the Admiral Kuznetsov.
