Historical Context
The Sukhoi Su-27 "Flanker" was primarily developed as an air-superiority fighter for the Soviet Union, entering service in 1985 to counter U.S. F-15s. Following the1991 Soviet collapse, it became the main fighter for Russia and Ukraine, and saw widespread export to China, Angola, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other nations.

Soviet Union/Russia: Introduced in 1985, it served as the primary, long-range interceptor and air-superiority fighter, later upgraded to Su-27SM/SM3 standards. Used extensively by the Russian Knights aerobatic team.
Ukraine: Inherited around 70-72 Su-27s after 1991, with many later modernized (Su-27S1M/P1M) and utilized in the Russo-Ukrainian War.
China: An early export customer (1991), China operated the Su-27 and later produced it under license as the Shenyang J-11.
