The Sukhoi Su-25 "Frogfoot," a heavily armored close-air support jet, has been used extensively in numerous conflicts since 1980, starting with the Soviet–Afghan War. Key deployments include the Iran–Iraq War, Chechen Wars, 2008 Russo-Georgian War, Syrian Civil War, and currently in the Russo-Ukrainian War by both sides.
Major Operational History
- Soviet–Afghan War (1980s): The Su-25 was used in combat evaluation, proving effective against Mujahideen fighters.
- Iran–Iraq War & Gulf War: Iraq used its Su-25 fleet, with some flying to Iran in 1991.
- Post-Soviet Conflicts: Employed by Georgia, Russia, and Abkhazian forces in the 1992–1993 Abkhazian war.
- Chechen Wars (1990s-2000s): Utilized by Russia for ground attack and close air support.
- African Conflicts: Used in Angola, Sudan (Darfur), Ivory Coast, and in the Ethiopian-Eritrean war.
