The Sukhoi Su-17M4 ("Fitter-K") was primarily used by the Soviet Air Force in the late 1980s for ground attack and reconnaissance, seeing action in the Soviet-Afghan War. It also served in the First Chechen War, with East Germany/Germany, and in various export roles, including with Poland, Angola, and Syria.
Key Usage Areas and Conflicts:
- Soviet Union/Russia: The M4 variant served in Afghanistan (1988–1989) and during the First Chechen War. They were utilized by several fighter-bomber and reconnaissance regiments within the USSR and later in East Germany.
- Eastern Bloc & Export (Su-22M4): The M4 variant, often under the export designation Su-22M4, was used by:
- Poland: Operated for decades, including in "Tiger" schemes.
- East Germany: Deployed in JBG77.
- Angola: Used in the 26th Air Regiment.
- Syria: Utilized in regional conflicts.
- Key Operations: Used heavily for ground attack, close air support, and reconnaissance during the late Cold War period.
The Russian Air Force retired the Su-17M4 from active service in 1998.
