The Sukhoi Su-15TM "Flagon-F" was primarily used as a high-performance supersonic interceptor by the Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO) from the mid-1970s until 1993, with continued service in Ukraine until 1996. It served exclusively within the USSR for homeland defense to intercept NATO bombers, operating from bases across the Soviet Union, including in the Far East and near the Baltic.

Key Locations and Usage:

  • Soviet Union (PVO Bases): Deployed extensively across the USSR to defend against bombers like the B-52 and U-2.
  • Key Bases: Specific units operated from locations such as Sakhalin (involved in the 1983 KAL 007 shootdown) and Astrakhan.
  • Ukraine: The last Su-15s remained in service with the Ukrainian Air Force at locations like Kramatorsk and Belbek until 1996.
  • Egypt: Some Su-15s were reportedly deployed to Egypt in 1972, flown by Soviet crews.

The aircraft was highly sensitive and was never exported to Warsaw Pact nations. It was designed for rapid, radar-guided interception rather than combat with other fighters.
