The Sikorsky CH-54 Tarhe (also known as the Skycrane) was used primarily by the United States Army and later by the Army National Guard.
 
Vietnam War (1965–1973)
The CH-54 is best known for its service in the Vietnam War, where it performed heavy-lift missions that few other helicopters could accomplish. Its duties included:
Transporting artillery pieces such as 155 mm howitzers to remote firebases.
Carrying bulldozers, construction equipment, fuel bladders, ammunition, and other oversized cargo.
Recovering downed helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft from jungles and combat zones.
Delivering supplies to isolated mountain outposts and bases near the DMZ.
Occasionally dropping 10,000-pound bombs to clear helicopter landing zones under the "Combat Trap" program.
 
The aircraft recovered hundreds of damaged aircraft during the war, saving the U.S. military substantial amounts of money.
 
United States National Guard
After Vietnam, many CH-54s were transferred to National Guard units across states including Alaska, Alabama, Connecticut, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. They were used for:
Disaster relief
Search and rescue support
Construction and engineering missions
Transporting large structures and equipment
Aircraft recovery operations
 
Civilian Service
After military retirement in the 1990s, many airframes became civilian S-64 Aircranes. They have been used worldwide for:
Wildfire suppression
Logging operations
Power-line and tower construction
Heavy-lift construction projects
Disaster response missions
