Historical Information
Weser originated as the incomplete Admiral Hipper-class heavy cruiser Seydlitz, which was about 95 percent complete when cruiser construction was stopped. In 1942 the Kriegsmarine began converting the ship into an auxiliary aircraft carrier; the main armament and most of the superstructure were removed, but the conversion was halted in 1943 before a flight deck and operational air group could be completed. The incomplete ship was later moved to Königsberg, scuttled as Soviet forces approached, and ultimately broken up after the war.
