Historical Context

The Sea Harrier FA2 (Fighter, Attack 2) was a highly upgraded variant of the original V/STOL (Vertical/Short Take-Off and Landing) jump jet, designed primarily for carrier-based fleet air defense for the British Royal Navy. Introduced in 1993, it featured advanced sensors and beyond-visual-range (BVR) weaponry that made it one of the most capable naval fighters of its era.

Key Upgrades and Capabilities

The FA2 was developed based on lessons from the 1982 Falklands War, where the earlier FRS1 variant excelled in close-range combat but lacked long-range interception capabilities.

  • Blue Vixen Radar: The most significant upgrade was the installation of the BAE Systems Blue Vixen pulse-Doppler radar. This all-weather radar provided look-down/shoot-down capability and could track multiple targets simultaneously.
  • AMRAAM Integration: The FA2 was the first UK aircraft to carry the AIM-120 AMRAAM. This combination of radar and missile allowed for BVR engagement, a massive leap over the Sidewinder-only capability of its predecessor.
  • Pegasus Mk 106 Engine: It was powered by the Rolls-Royce Pegasus 106 turbofan engine, which provided roughly 21,500 lbf of thrust and was optimized for better performance in hotter climates.
  • Improved Cockpit: The aircraft featured a "glass cockpit" with dual head-down displays (HDDs) and a modernized head-up display (HUD), streamlining the workload for its single pilot.

Performance Specifications

According to data from Naval Technology and the Pima Air & Space Museum:

  • Maximum Speed: Mach 0.95 to Mach 1.25 at high altitude (approximately 735 mph).
  • Service Ceiling: 51,000 feet.
  • Combat Range: Approximately 620 miles.
  • Armament:
    • Guns: Two 30mm ADEN cannon pods under the fuselage.
    • Hardpoints: Five total; capable of carrying AIM-120 AMRAAM, AIM-9 Sidewinder, Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles, and ALARM anti-radiation missiles.

Key Aspects of the BAe Sea Harrier History:

  • Development and Origin: The Sea Harrier adapted the Harrier V/STOL concept for fleet air defense and carrier operations, adding naval avionics, radar, and a revised cockpit. The later FA2 introduced a major radar and weapons upgrade.
  • Military and Combat Operations: Sea Harrier FRS1s achieved their best-known combat record during the 1982 Falklands War. Later Sea Harriers also supported British operations in the Balkans and other post-Cold War deployments.
  • Foreign Operators: India operated its own Sea Harrier FRS.51 variant, distinct from the British FRS1 and FA2 represented here.
  • Upgrades and Retirement: The FRS1 was rebuilt into the FA2 with the Blue Vixen radar and AMRAAM capability. British Sea Harrier service ended in 2006.
  • Design and Armament: Weapons included 30 mm ADEN cannon pods, AIM-9 Sidewinders, bombs and rockets; the FA2 added AIM-120 AMRAAM beyond-visual-range capability.
