Historical Information
The Saudi fin flash is based directly on the national flag of Saudi Arabia, featuring a green field with the white Shahada above a horizontal sword. Because the Arabic inscription must remain correctly oriented, the markings used on opposite sides of an aircraft are not simply mirror images of one another.
Saudi aircraft markings evolved during the twentieth century, with the familiar modern national insignia introduced in 1972. From this period onward, the Saudi national flag has been used as the standard fin flash alongside the green-white-green RSAF roundel incorporating the palm tree and crossed swords.
The marking has appeared on aircraft representing several generations of Saudi military aviation, including the English Electric Lightning, F-5 Tiger II, F-15 Eagle, Panavia Tornado, BAE Hawk, and Eurofighter Typhoon.
