The SAAF Atlas Impala Mk II (MB-326K) was primarily used for ground-attack, close air support, and low-level strike missions during the South African Border War (Angola and Namibia). Manufactured locally by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation, it saw extensive frontline service in the following areas:

  • The Angolan & Namibian Border: Heavily deployed for low-level reconnaissance and counter-insurgency operations. Because it was capable of operating from rugged, primitive airfields, it provided rapid tactical relief to ground troops.
  • Air-to-Air Intercepts: In 1985, Impala Mk IIs were used in a highly successful covert operation to intercept and destroy communist-supplied transport and attack helicopters (including Mi-24s) in Angola.Key Details of SAAF Impala Mk II Usage:
  • Armament: Equipped with powerful twin 30 mm cannons, bombs, and rockets.
  • Squadrons: Operated primarily by units like No. 8 Squadron (based at AFB Bloemspruit in Bloemfontein) and No. 4 Squadron.
  • Legacy: The aircraft was retired in 2000. Surviving models are preserved and displayed at institutions such as the DITSONG: Museums of South Africa and the SAAF Museum.
