Historical Context

The Atlas Cheetah-C was primarily used by the South African Air Force (SAAF) as its main fighter aircraft from 1992 until 2008. Following its retirement in South Africa, the variant was sold and utilized by the Ecuadorian Air Force and a private American defense contractor.

Operators and Operational History:

  • South African Air Force (SAAF): The Cheetah-C was the definitive single-seat combat variant developed by the Atlas Aircraft Corporation to counter Soviet-built aircraft like the MiG-23. It was operated exclusively by 2 Squadron (the "Flying Cheetahs") out of AFB Louis Trichardt (now Makhado). While the earlier Cheetah-D and E variants saw active deployment during the South African Border War, the Cheetah-C entered service just as that conflict ended, serving instead as South Africa's premier frontline deterrent during the 1990s and 2000s.
  • Ecuadorian Air Force: In 2010, Ecuador purchased 10 retired Cheetah-C models (along with two dual-seat Cheetah-Bs) from South Africa. They were used for air defense and ground attack missions to replace their aging Mirage F1 fleet.
  • Draken International: In 2017, this private U.S.-based defense contractor acquired 9 Cheetah-C airframes. They use the jets in the United States as "Red Air" adversary aircraft to simulate enemy forces during training exercises for U.S. military fighter pilots.
