Historical Context
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen was developed as a lightweight multirole fighter to replace Sweden's Viggen and Draken fleets with a single flexible aircraft. The prototype first flew in 1988, and the Gripen entered Swedish operational service during the 1990s.
The JAS 39C introduced improved NATO interoperability, aerial-refueling capability, modernized avionics, and expanded weapons compatibility while retaining the Gripen's short-field and dispersed-base performance.
