Historical Context
The Saab AJ 37 Viggen was the initial strike version of Sweden's Viggen family, developed to replace the A 32A Lansen and provide a modern aircraft for low-level attack, anti-ship strike, and secondary fighter missions. The Viggen prototype first flew in 1967, and the AJ 37 entered service in the early 1970s.
The aircraft was designed around Sweden's unique dispersed-base doctrine, emphasizing short takeoff and landing performance, rapid turnaround, and high-speed low-level operations.
