The Saab J29F Tunnan—the final production variant of the iconic "Flying Barrel"—was used exclusively by the Swedish Air Force and the Austrian Armed Forces. It is highly celebrated as the only Swedish-designed fighter jet to ever see active combat.
 
The J29F model served primarily in the following capacities and regions: 
Sweden: The Swedish Air Force used the J29F extensively as an interceptor, fighter-bomber, and later as a target tow and countermeasures trainer from 1955 until its official military retirement in August 1976. Sweden’s harsh skies were its primary training and operational ground.
The Republic of Congo (UN Peacekeeping): During the Congo Crisis (1961–1964), the United Nations deployed several Tunnans (primarily J29Bs and later J29Fs) to support the ONUC peacekeeping mission. Based at airfields in the Congo, the jets established air superiority and executed crucial ground-attack and reconnaissance missions using cannons and unguided rockets.
Austria: The Austrian Air Force became the Tunnan's only foreign customer. They acquired 30 overhauled J29Fs from Sweden in 1961, flying them primarily out of Vienna-Schwechat, Linz-Hörsching, and Graz-Thalerhof until they were decommissioned in 1972
