The Saab J29B Tunnan was primarily operated by the Swedish Air Force and saw notable combat use with the United Nations in the Republic of Congo. It was also exported to and flown by the Austrian Air Force.
 
Sweden
Primary Role: The aircraft was designed as a Cold War interceptor and fighter-bomber to counter potential Soviet threats.
Operational Concept: To survive, the Swedish Air Force dispersed its J29B Tunnans across a network of hidden, rural roadways and forest strips known as "War Bases" (Krigsflygbaser), rather than relying on centralized and vulnerable airfields.
United Nations (The Congo)
Deployment: Between 1961 and 1964, Sweden deployed a squadron of J29Bs (organized as the F 22 Wing) to the former Belgian Congo as part of the United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC).
Combat Use: These Tunnans were the first Swedish jet aircraft to see active combat. Wearing UN identifying markings, they executed close air support, ground attacks against enemy bases, and reconnaissance missions. They were highly praised for their maneuverability and suffered no losses to enemy ground fire.
Austria
Service: Austria purchased a total of 30 Tunnans in the early 1960s (mostly modified J29F versions).
Usage: They served as frontline interceptors and attack aircraft for the Austrian Air Force from 1961 until they were retired in 1972.
