Historical Context
The Saab J 35 Draken was a Swedish supersonic interceptor developed to defend Sweden against high-speed bombers during the Cold War. The prototype first flew in 1955, and the type entered Swedish Air Force service around 1960.
The J 35F became one of the principal Swedish interceptor versions, combining the Draken's distinctive double-delta wing with improved radar and missile capability.
Key Aspects of the Saab J 35F Draken History:
- Development and Origin: Saab created the Draken around a unique double-delta wing that provided both high-speed performance and acceptable low-speed handling for operations from Sweden's dispersed bases.
- Military and Combat Operations:
- Swedish Air Force: The J 35F formed a major part of Sweden's air-defense network during the Cold War.
- Combat Record: Swedish J 35Fs did not see documented wartime combat.
- Foreign Operators:
- Finland: Operated Drakens including aircraft related to the F-model standard.
- Denmark and Austria: Operated other Draken variants adapted to their national requirements.
- Upgrades and Retirement: The Draken underwent repeated avionics and weapons improvements and remained in service with some operators long after Sweden began replacing it with the Viggen.
- Design and Armament: Single-seat supersonic interceptor with radar, cannon, and guided air-to-air missiles, optimized for rapid interception from dispersed airfields.
The Draken became one of the most recognizable Swedish combat aircraft and was the first fully supersonic fighter developed in Western Europe to enter operational service.
