The Saab J-35F Draken was primarily used by the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) as its main front-line interceptor variant, while customized configurations based on the F-model design were exported to Finland. Broadly, the overall Saab 35 Draken family saw service across four European nations and later found secondary utility in the United States.
Primary Military Operators
- Sweden: The J-35F was the most heavily produced variant for the Swedish Air Force. It served as a critical pillar of Sweden's Cold War air defense network to protect its neutral airspace from potential Soviet incursions. Many of these Swedish F-models were later upgraded into the final J-35J standard during the late 1980s.
- Finland: The Finnish Air Force operated the J-35FS, which was a designated export variant directly based on the Swedish F-model. Finland also assembled 12 of their own J-35XS fighter jets to a similar F-variant specification using kits provided by Saab.
Other Global Operators (Draken Family Variants)
While the specific "F" designation belongs to the Swedish and Finnish inventories, other tailored variants of the aircraft flew elsewhere:
- Denmark: The Royal Danish Air Force operated modified export variants designated as the F-35, TF-35, and RF-35. Unlike the interceptor focus of the F-model, Denmark utilized theirs primarily for ground-strike and reconnaissance operations.
- Austria: The Austrian Air Force purchased refurbished Swedish J-35D models upgraded to the J-35Ö interceptor standard. They were the final military operator of the airframe, retiring them in late 2005.
- United States: Following their retirement from Danish service, several Drakens were brought to the U.S. and operated by the National Test Pilot School in Mojave, California, to train test pilots.
