Historical Information

The Type C family of markings was introduced in July 1942 as the RAF refined its wartime identification system. The reduced white area lowered visual contrast while still retaining all three British national colors.

From 1942 through the end of the war, the Type C fin flash became a standard companion to Type C and C.1 fuselage markings on many RAF aircraft. It appeared across Fighter Command, Bomber Command, Coastal Command, Tactical Air Force, transport, reconnaissance, and other roles.

Representative aircraft include the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Typhoon, Hawker Tempest, de Havilland Mosquito, Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, Bristol Beaufighter, North American Mustang, and Douglas Dakota.

As with roundels, exact fin-flash dimensions could differ by aircraft type. The narrow-white Type C appearance, however, is one of the most characteristic features of mid- and late-war RAF aircraft.
