Historical Information
World War II RAF marking practice was not identical across every command or aircraft type. Night bombers, night fighters, photo-reconnaissance aircraft, and selected high-altitude schemes could use more subdued national markings designed to reduce contrast against dark finishes.
The two-color fin flash was particularly appropriate for aircraft carrying Type B roundels and other low-visibility markings. Orientation and proportions could vary on specialized schemes, so period photographs are especially important when reproducing a specific airframe.
Aircraft associated with low-visibility RAF markings include the Vickers Wellington, Avro Lancaster, Handley Page Halifax, de Havilland Mosquito, photo-reconnaissance Spitfire, and other night or specialist types.
This fin flash is best viewed as a specialist alternative to the more common Type A and Type C red-white-blue flashes rather than a universal RAF marking.
