Historical Information
Although British aircraft had used colored rudder stripes in earlier periods, the wartime fin flash was formally adopted in 1940. Early applications varied considerably in size and proportion before the RAF moved toward more standardized red-white-blue flashes later that year.
The Type A fin flash was associated with the period when Type A-1 fuselage roundels and Type B upper-wing markings were common. It became a familiar feature of aircraft during the Battle of Britain, early Bomber Command operations, and the opening years of the war in the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Type A fin flashes appeared on aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, Bristol Blenheim, Vickers Wellington, Handley Page Hampden, Armstrong Whitworth Whitley, Westland Lysander, and Fairey Swordfish.
Fin-flash dimensions could differ by aircraft type and period, and early-war examples sometimes occupied a large portion of the fin. Period photographs are therefore useful when selecting size and position.
