Historical Information
RAF and Commonwealth aircraft in India, Burma, and the wider CBI theater progressively altered their national insignia from 1942 onward. Early aircraft could retain standard or partly modified fin flashes, while later SEAC practice moved toward more subdued blue-based markings consistent with the red-free roundels used against Japan.
These theater markings were frequently applied or modified locally, and dimensions could be smaller than European RAF standards. This reflected both the need for positive Allied recognition and the desire to reduce visual contrast against tropical camouflage.
SEAC fin markings can be associated with aircraft such as the Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, Republic Thunderbolt, de Havilland Mosquito, Bristol Beaufighter, Consolidated Liberator, Douglas Dakota, and Vultee Vengeance.
Because SEAC tail markings evolved during the war, period photographs are recommended when matching the fin flash to a specific roundel type and aircraft date.
