Historical Information

The Potez 630 was a twin-engine, two- or three-seat fighter developed as part of the versatile Potez 63 family. Designed for fighter direction, escort, and night-fighter duties, it entered French service before WWII but suffered from unreliable Hispano-Suiza engines and was largely removed from front-line fighter use before the main German offensive of 1940.

Key details regarding the usage of the Potez 630 include:

  • Combat Service: Served during the opening period of WWII, although most Potez 630s were withdrawn from first-line combat roles before the Battle of France reached its height.
  • Operational Roles: Fighter direction, day fighter, escort fighter, night fighter, and later training.
  • Service Use: Operated by Armée de l'Air fighter and night-fighter units before many aircraft were reassigned as trainers.
  • Notable Operations: The type helped introduce French crews to modern twin-engine fighter operations and served alongside the more successful Gnome-Rhône-powered Potez 631.
  • Retirement: Engine reliability and logistics problems led to its withdrawal from front-line service in early 1940, with remaining aircraft used mainly for training and conversion duties.
