Historical Background
The Ponnier M.1 was an early World War I single-seat fighter designed in France and introduced during 1916. Most of the small production run was acquired by the Belgian Aviation Militaire at a time when Belgium urgently needed modern fighter aircraft.
Although compact and distinctive, the M.1 proved difficult to handle and was quickly withdrawn from front-line use. Its brief service makes it one of the more unusual Belgian fighter types of the First World War.
