The Piasecki H-21 Shawnee (nicknamed the "Flying Banana") served with several nations during the 1950s and 1960s and saw operational use in a variety of environments, from the Arctic to Southeast Asia.
Major Areas of Use
Vietnam War (1961–1964)
The H-21 is best known for its service in the early stages of the Vietnam War. U.S. Army CH-21C Shawnees transported troops, supplies, and casualties and conducted some of the first helicopter-borne air assault operations in South Vietnam. They served until being replaced by the more capable Bell UH-1 Iroquois ("Huey").
Algerian War (1954–1962)
French Army and Air Force H-21s were heavily employed during the war in Algeria. They transported troops into remote areas and were among the first helicopters used extensively in counterinsurgency operations. Some were experimentally armed with rockets and machine guns.
Arctic and DEW Line Operations
The U.S. Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force used H-21s to support the Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line radar stations stretching across Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, and Iceland during the Cold War. The helicopter was originally designed for cold-weather rescue and transport missions.
