Historical Context
The Panavia Tornado was a multinational European variable-sweep-wing combat aircraft developed by the United Kingdom, West Germany, and Italy for low-level strike, interdiction, reconnaissance, electronic combat, and specialized air-defense missions. The prototype first flew in 1974, and the Italian Air Force began receiving Tornado aircraft in the early 1980s.
Italy operated the IDS and ECR versions and also leased the air-defense Tornado F.3 ADV during the 1990s while awaiting the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Upgrades and Retirement: Italy modernized parts of its fleet with improved avionics, targeting, reconnaissance, and precision weapons while transitioning to newer multirole aircraft such as the F-35.
