The Nieuport 17 was one of the most successful French fighters of World War I. Introduced into service during 1916, it refined the lightweight sesquiplane layout of earlier Nieuport fighters while providing improved performance and armament.

The aircraft served extensively with France and several Allied air forces and was flown by many leading fighter pilots before newer designs gradually replaced it during 1917.
