Historical Context
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 was a Soviet lightweight supersonic fighter designed to combine high speed, rapid climb, and relatively simple operation in a compact delta-wing airframe. The prototype family first flew in the mid-1950s, and production MiG-21s entered Soviet service around 1959.
The MiG-21 became one of the most important combat aircraft of the Cold War. Continuous development produced interceptor, fighter, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance, and trainer variants with progressively improved radar, engines, fuel capacity, and weapons.
Key Aspects of the MiG-21 History:
Development and Origin: Developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich around a tailed-delta configuration with a nose intake and single Tumansky turbojet. Later versions added more capable radar, improved missiles, and increased fuel.
Military and Combat Operations:
Vietnam War: North Vietnamese MiG-21s fought U.S. fighters in high-speed interception and hit-and-run attacks.
Middle East and South Asia: MiG-21 variants saw extensive combat in Arab-Israeli wars and Indo-Pakistani conflicts and remained active in many later regional wars.
Foreign Operators: More than 50 countries operated the MiG-21 or licensed derivatives, including India, which produced large numbers domestically.
Upgrades and Retirement: The family evolved through many subtypes such as the PF, PFM, MF, bis, and two-seat U/UM trainers. Modernized aircraft remained operational into the 21st century.
Design and Armament: Single-engine delta-wing fighter with radar-guided or infrared air-to-air missiles, cannon on many variants, and the ability to carry bombs, rockets, reconnaissance stores, and external tanks.
More than 11,000 MiG-21s were built in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, and India, making it one of history's most-produced supersonic combat aircraft.
