Historical Context

The Mikoyan MiG-27 was a Soviet variable-geometry ground-attack aircraft developed from the MiG-23 fighter family for low-level strike, battlefield interdiction, and close-support missions. The MiG-27 entered service in the mid-1970s.

Compared with the MiG-23 fighter, the MiG-27 featured a redesigned nose for improved forward visibility, specialized navigation and attack avionics, reinforced landing gear, and a powerful internal cannon.

Key Aspects of the MiG-27 History:

  • Development and Origin: Evolved from MiG-23BN attack concepts into a dedicated strike aircraft optimized for low-altitude penetration and conventional or precision-guided weapons delivery.
  • Military and Combat Operations:
    • Soviet service: MiG-27s equipped tactical aviation units and were deployed during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
    • Indian Air Force: India license-produced and operated large numbers of MiG-27s for strike and close-support duties, including combat during the 1999 Kargil conflict.
  • Foreign Operators: Export and licensed-production users included India, Kazakhstan, and Sri Lanka, among others.
  • Upgrades and Retirement: Later K and M variants incorporated improved targeting and navigation systems. India modernized part of its fleet before retiring the type in 2019.
  • Design and Armament: Single-engine variable-sweep strike aircraft with a 30 mm GSh-6-30 cannon and a wide range of bombs, rockets, guided missiles, anti-radiation weapons, and external fuel tanks.

The MiG-27 was one of the Soviet Union's principal dedicated tactical strike aircraft and remained in frontline service with several operators long after production ended.
