Historical Context
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 was a Soviet high-speed interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft developed to counter projected high-altitude, high-speed Western threats. The prototype family first flew in 1964, and operational MiG-25 variants entered Soviet service in the early 1970s.
Designed around extreme speed and altitude rather than close-in maneuverability, the MiG-25 used powerful twin Tumansky R-15 engines and extensive stainless-steel construction. It became famous in the West after Viktor Belenko defected to Japan in a MiG-25P in 1976.

Development and Origin: Developed primarily as a high-altitude interceptor and reconnaissance platform able to exceed Mach 2.5 while operating at very high altitude.
Military and Combat Operations:
Soviet reconnaissance: Reconnaissance MiG-25 variants were used for strategic and tactical intelligence missions.
Middle East and Gulf conflicts: Iraqi and other export MiG-25s flew reconnaissance and interceptor missions; Iraqi MiG-25s saw combat during the Iran-Iraq War and Gulf War era.
Foreign Operators: Export customers included Algeria, Bulgaria, India, Iraq, Libya, and Syria, though exact subvariants differed among operators.
Upgrades and Retirement: Interceptor versions evolved into the improved MiG-25PD/PDS with updated radar and engines, while reconnaissance/strike derivatives remained in service for decades. The MiG-31 ultimately replaced it in the interceptor role.
Design and Armament: Twin-engine high-speed aircraft with large radar-guided missiles on interceptor versions; reconnaissance and specialized strike versions carried cameras, sensors, or bombs instead.
The MiG-25 set numerous speed and altitude records and remains one of the most distinctive high-performance combat aircraft of the Cold War.
