Historical Context
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 was a Soviet swept-wing jet fighter developed immediately after World War II to give the USSR a modern high-altitude interceptor capable of confronting the new generation of Western jet aircraft. The prototype first flew in 1947, and the MiG-15 entered operational service in 1949.
Powered by the Klimov VK-1 turbojet and armed with one 37 mm and two 23 mm cannon, the MiG-15 combined excellent climb, altitude performance, and heavy firepower. Its appearance over Korea transformed the air war and established it as one of the most important early jet fighters.

Development and Origin: Developed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich design bureau around a swept-wing configuration and a Soviet-built derivative of the Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet, the MiG-15 was designed primarily as a bomber interceptor.
Military and Combat Operations:
Soviet and allied service: The type equipped Soviet and Warsaw Pact fighter units and was supplied widely to allied nations.
Korean War: MiG-15s flown by Chinese, North Korean, and Soviet pilots fought United Nations aircraft, particularly the F-86 Sabre, in the famous battles over "MiG Alley."
Foreign Operators: The MiG-15 served in large numbers with China, North Korea, Poland, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Egypt, and many other states. Licensed production included the Czech S-102 and Polish Lim-1.
Upgrades and Retirement: Improved MiG-15bis aircraft received a more powerful engine and refinements, while the two-seat MiG-15UTI became one of the most widely used jet trainers of its era.
Design and Armament: Single-seat fighter configuration with swept wings, nose intake, heavy cannon armament, and provision for bombs or external stores depending on variant.
More than 13,000 MiG-15 family aircraft were produced in the Soviet Union and under license, making it one of the most numerous jet fighters ever built.
