The Martin B-57B Canberra was primarily used by the U.S. Air Force as a light bomber and night intruder in the Vietnam War (1965–1969). Operating from bases like Phan Rang, it flew close air support and, later, conducted high-altitude testing and atmospheric research with NASA in the 1970s.

Key Locations and Uses:

  • Vietnam War (Southeast Asia): Used by the 8th and 13th Bomb Squadrons at Phan Rang AB for night bombing and ground attack against the Ho Chi Minh Trail.
  • U.S. Air Force Operations: Operated across various Tactical Air Command bases from 1954 to the early 1970s.
  • NASA/Research (California): Utilized at Edwards Air Force Base for high-altitude tests, including atmosphere testing and studies for the Viking Mars lander.
  • International Use: Exported to Pakistan, where B-57s saw combat in the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars.

It was widely retired from active service by the late 1970s, though some converted models were used through the 1980s.
