Historical Information

The Loire-Nieuport LN.401 was a French single-seat dive-bomber developed for the Aéronavale from the earlier LN.40. It entered service shortly before the German invasion of France and became one of the few dedicated French naval dive-bombers to see combat during the Battle of France.

Key details regarding the usage of the Loire-Nieuport IN401 include:

  • Combat Service: Used in combat during May and June 1940 against advancing German ground forces and later on reconnaissance and naval-support missions in southern France.
  • Operational Roles: Dive bombing, naval attack, reconnaissance, and coastal support.
  • Service Use: Operated primarily by French naval aviation units, including Aéronavale dive-bomber escadrilles.
  • Notable Operations: LN.401 and closely related LN.411 aircraft suffered heavy losses while attacking German columns during the Battle of France; surviving aircraft later operated from southern France and were evacuated to North Africa after the armistice.
  • Retirement: The type's brief front-line career was effectively ended by the fall of France in June 1940, with surviving aircraft placed in reserve or storage.
