The Lockheed U-2R, a significantly larger and more capable variant of the original U-2, was primarily used by the USAF for global, high-altitude strategic reconnaissance from the late 1960s through the Cold War, including missions over Southeast Asia, the Soviet Union, and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Later, they were used for reconnaissance in the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan. 
 
Key Deployment Areas and Operations:
Cold War Operations: The U-2R conducted long-range intelligence gathering, monitoring the Soviet Union and China.
Southeast Asia: Used for continuous surveillance over Vietnam until the fall of Saigon in 1975.
Global Surveillance: The U-2R variant (and later the U-2S) was utilized in the Balkans, and in combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Scientific Roles: NASA operated U-2 aircraft (including U-2R models) for high-altitude scientific research, including atmospheric sampling, volcano surveillance (Mt. St. Helens), and earth science studies. 
 
U-2R aircraft served as critical intelligence platforms for photo and electronic surveillance, operating primarily for the USAF and NASA.
