The English Electric Lightning F Mk.6 was the ultimate production variant of the iconic British Cold War interceptor. Introduced in December 1965, it represented the pinnacle of the Lightning's development, designed specifically for high-speed point defense against Soviet bombers.

Key Features & Upgrades

  • Performance: Remained the only all-British fighter capable of Mach 2+. It was famous for its "stacked" engine configuration (two Rolls-Royce Avon turbojets) and exceptional rate of climb.
  • Wing Design: Featured a new, more efficient cambered wing with a distinctive "kink" on the leading edge to improve high-speed stability and subsonic range.
  • Fuel Capacity: Addressed the type's notoriously short endurance with a larger ventral fuel tank and the ability to carry unique over-wing ferry tanks.
  • Armament: Reintroduced internal 30 mm ADEN cannons and was primarily armed with Red Top or Firestreak air-to-air missiles.

Operational History

The F Mk.6 served as the Royal Air Force's primary interceptor throughout the 1960s and 70s. By the late 1980s, the Lightning was gradually replaced by the McDonnell Douglas Phantom and the Panavia Tornado F3, with the last units withdrawn from service in 1988.
