Historical Information
The Tarawa class combined the functions of earlier amphibious command, helicopter carrier, and dock landing ships into a large general-purpose amphibious assault ship. Its flight deck supported helicopters and AV-8B Harriers while its well deck operated landing craft and LCACs. USS Nassau served as one of the five ships of the class.
