Historical Information
The Kawanishi H6K, known to the Allies as "Mavis," was a four-engine flying boat developed for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Designated the Navy Type 97 Flying Boat, it entered service in 1938 and provided long-range maritime reconnaissance across the Pacific. Its high-mounted parasol wing, strut-braced hull and twin-tail arrangement gave it a distinctive appearance.
 
Operating from sheltered anchorages and island bases, the H6K searched wide stretches of ocean and also carried out bombing and transport duties. It saw extensive service in the southwest Pacific. Its long endurance was valuable over remote waters, but limited protection made it vulnerable to Allied fighters. As the more advanced Kawanishi H8K "Emily" became available, H6Ks continued in reconnaissance and transport roles.
