Historical Information
JS Kaga entered service in 2017 as the second Izumo-class helicopter destroyer. Japan subsequently approved conversion of both Izumo-class ships to support F-35B operations. Kaga's modifications include major changes to the forward flight deck and aviation-support arrangements, expanding the ship's ability to operate fixed-wing STOVL aircraft while retaining command, helicopter, transport, and disaster-relief capabilities.
