Junkers Ju-86D

From $5.03Price

The Junkers Ju-86D was a bomber variant used primarily by the Luftwaffe in the late 1930s and early 1940s, specifically during the Spanish Civil War (1937) and the invasion of Poland (1939). Due to poor performance and reliability issues, they were quickly withdrawn from frontline service and used for training or converted into specialized high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft (Ju-86P).

Key details regarding the usage of the Ju-86D include:

  • Spanish Civil War: Four to five Ju-86D-1 bombers were deployed by the Condor Legion in 1937, where they proved inferior to other bombers and vulnerable to biplane fighters.
  • Invasion of Poland: The Luftwaffe operated these aircraft during the 1939 Polish campaign.
  • Conversion: Many D-series aircraft were converted into high-altitude reconnaissance (P-series) aircraft, which flew missions over Britain, the Soviet Union, and North Africa.
  • Operators: While primarily a German aircraft, the broader Ju-86 family saw service in various countries, including Hungary, South Africa, and Sweden.
