Historical Information
These Japanese Imperial Naval Flag decals reproduce the distinctive Rising Sun naval ensign used by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). The design features a red sun positioned toward the hoist with 16 red rays extending across a white field, clearly distinguishing it from the Imperial Japanese Army version, which used a centered sun.
The Imperial Japanese Navy formally adopted its Rising Sun naval ensign in 1889, and it remained the service flag of the IJN through Japan’s surrender in 1945. The flag became closely associated with Japanese warships and naval forces operating throughout the Pacific and Asian theaters during World War II.
Although similar to the Imperial Japanese Army Rising Sun flag, the naval version is easily identified by its off-center red sun positioned toward the hoist. Both designs feature 16 rays, but the different sun placement makes the Army and Navy flags visually distinct.
