Historical Context
The Chengdu J-10B was a major development of the original J-10A, introducing a redesigned diverterless supersonic inlet, improved radar and avionics, infrared search-and-track equipment and enhanced electronic warfare capability.
Entering service during the 2010s, the J-10B served as an important transitional step between the first-generation J-10A and the more advanced J-10C.
 
 
Key Aspects of the J-10B History:
Development and Origin: Chengdu revised the J-10's intake, nose, sensors and avionics to improve aerodynamic efficiency and combat capability. The J-10B also served as a test platform for improved Chinese engines and advanced sensor technologies.
Military and Combat Operations:
People's Liberation Army Air Force: J-10Bs have served in front-line fighter units, exercises and air-defense missions. There is no widely documented combat employment of the exact J-10B.
Naval Strike Configuration: J-10B aircraft can support maritime-strike mission profiles when equipped with appropriate sensors and anti-ship weapons, but "Naval Strike" is a mission configuration rather than a separate official J-10B variant.
Foreign Operators:
No foreign operator is known to have received the exact J-10B.
Pakistan later became the first export customer for the J-10 family with the J-10CE, an export model based on the newer J-10C generation.
Upgrades and Retirement: The J-10B's sensor, intake and avionics changes led directly into the J-10C, which added further improvements including advanced radar and weapons integration. J-10Bs remain an important developmental stage in the family.
Design and Armament: The J-10B retains the single-engine canard-delta configuration while adding a diverterless inlet and improved sensors. It can carry modern air-to-air missiles, precision-guided weapons, anti-ship weapons and external fuel tanks.
 
 
The J-10B was produced in smaller numbers than the J-10A and J-10C but played a critical role in maturing the J-10 into a modern networked multirole fighter.
