Historical Information
Commissioned in 2015, JS Izumo is the lead ship of the Izumo class and was designed around a full-length flight deck and large hangar for helicopter operations. The ship supports anti-submarine warfare, command and control, transport, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. Its aviation facilities made the class the largest surface ships operated by the JMSDF when introduced.
