Historical Information
JS Izumo entered service in 2015 as the lead ship of the JMSDF's largest postwar surface-combatant class. The ship was later selected for modification to support F-35B operations, adding a new fixed-wing aviation role to its original helicopter-based anti-submarine, command, transport, and disaster-response missions. The JMSDF continues to designate the ship as a helicopter destroyer while expanding its aviation capability.
