Historical Information

Iranian military aircraft have used variations of the national tricolor for most of the history of the country's air arm. The basic fin marking consists of horizontal green, white, and red bands, reflecting the colors of the Iranian national flag.

Before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, the Imperial Iranian Air Force operated one of the most advanced Western-equipped air forces in the Middle East. Major combat aircraft included the F-5 Tiger II, F-4 Phantom II, and F-14 Tomcat.

After the revolution, the service became the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force. Much of the existing aircraft fleet remained in operation, and Iranian national colors continued to be prominently displayed on aircraft tails.

During the Iran-Iraq War of 1980-1988, Iranian F-4s, F-5s, and F-14s carrying these national colors flew extensive combat operations. Later Iranian inventories also incorporated aircraft including the MiG-29, Su-24, F-7, and domestically modified derivatives of earlier Western types.
