Historical Information

When India gained independence in August 1947, aircraft of the Royal Indian Air Force initially continued to carry markings derived from those of the British RAF. New national aircraft insignia were introduced during 1948, including a tricolor fin flash using India’s national colors. Early instructions specified saffron toward the leading edge and green toward the trailing edge, alongside the short-lived blue Ashoka Chakra aircraft roundel.

The Ashoka Chakra roundel proved difficult to reproduce consistently and was soon replaced by the familiar saffron-white-green concentric roundel. The fin flash remained, although its orientation evolved. By the post-independence period, the standard arrangement became green toward the leading edge, white in the center, and saffron toward the trailing edge, which remains the familiar Indian military aircraft fin marking.

The tricolor fin flash has appeared on generations of Indian combat and support aircraft, including the Hawker Tempest, de Havilland Vampire, Hawker Hunter, Folland Gnat, MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-27, MiG-29, SEPECAT Jaguar, Mirage 2000, Sukhoi Su-30MKI, HAL Tejas, and numerous transport and training aircraft.

These markings are suitable for representing Indian aircraft across conflicts including the 1947–48 Kashmir operations, 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, Kargil conflict, and modern Indian Air Force service. Because marking dimensions and placement can vary by aircraft and period, photographs of the specific aircraft being represented are recommended when maximum historical accuracy is desired.
