Historical Information

The Indian Air Force was established in 1932 during British rule and originally used markings derived from those of the Royal Air Force. During World War II, Indian aircraft serving against Japan in the Burma theater used modified Allied roundels that omitted the red center to reduce the possibility of confusion with the Japanese Hinomaru.

Following Indian independence in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force needed a new national marking that reflected the newly independent country. In June 1948, the government introduced an interim insignia consisting of a blue Ashoka Chakra, or wheel, accompanied by a tricolor fin flash. Aircraft carrying this distinctive marking included Spitfires, Tempests, Dakotas, Tiger Moths, Prentices, and Oxfords, and several saw operational service during the fighting in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ashoka Chakra proved difficult to reproduce consistently on operational aircraft. After approximately a year and a half, it was replaced by the simpler saffron, white, and green concentric roundel that became the standard Indian Air Force national marking. The tricolor roundel was adopted around the time India became a Republic in 1950 and has remained the basis of the IAF aircraft insignia ever since.

Over the following decades, the roundel appeared on aircraft representing nearly every phase of Indian military aviation. Early postwar aircraft such as the Vampire, Ouragan/Toofani, Mystère IVA, Hawker Hunter, and Folland Gnat carried the marking during the rapid modernization of the IAF in the 1950s and 1960s.

It subsequently became closely associated with the Soviet-designed aircraft that formed a major part of Indian air power during the Cold War, including the MiG-21, MiG-23, MiG-25, MiG-27, and MiG-29. Western and domestically produced aircraft such as the SEPECAT Jaguar, Mirage 2000, HAL Marut, Su-30MKI, HAL Tejas, and Dassault Rafale have continued to carry Indian national markings into the modern era.

The tricolor roundel has therefore appeared on Indian aircraft during major operations including the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, Kargil conflict, and numerous later deployments. Although the basic green-white-saffron design has remained consistent, the size, exact proportions, and placement of the roundel have varied between aircraft types and periods.
