CV Hiryu Carrier Division 2 Air Wing – Zeros, Vals & Kates

This decal set represents the Imperial Japanese Navy air group of Hiryu, which operated with Soryu in Carrier Division 2. Its striking force combined Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighters, Aichi D3A “Val” dive bombers, and Nakajima B5N “Kate” torpedo/level bombers.

Historical Context

Hiryu took part in the Pearl Harbor attack and numerous early-war carrier operations before fighting at the Battle of Midway in June 1942. After Akagi, Kaga and Soryu were crippled, Hiryu launched two counterstrikes that severely damaged USS Yorktown before Hiryu herself was mortally damaged by U.S. dive bombers.
